Inland Rail Skills Academy

The Inland Rail Skills Academy was launched in August 2019 to help create opportunities for education, training, skills development and employment for communities along the project alignment.

The Inland Rail Skills Academy aims to:

  • increase the number of skilled local people eligible for employment on Inland Rail and associated regional industries
  • increase school student awareness and capability by connecting students with industry best practice
  • create opportunities for local businesses to participate in new supply chains
  • equip Inland Rail employees with world-class skills

Academy members will benefit from access to Inland Rail’s partnerships with recognised industry experts who will deliver programs designed to build skills and prosperity in local communities, regions and nationally.

Industry partnerships and programs

The Inland Rail Skills Academy includes the following partnerships and programs:

Undergraduate scholarships

A total of 20 Inland Rail scholarships will be available through the University of Southern Queensland, Charles Sturt University (NSW) and La Trobe University (Vic) for students commencing their studies in 2020 and 2021.

These scholarships will support local students to launch their career path in industries which directly contribute to their region’s prosperity and social cohesion.

Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education

Primary and secondary schools will participate in a range of hands-on experiential-style workshops which aim to inspire learning and career paths in this sector.

Professional development will also be offered to teachers to build their skills in teaching STEM subjects.

Developing Inland Rail employee capability

The Academy will focus on supporting ARTC employees to deliver the Inland Rail program of work.

Training programs will become available for employees to develop skills in areas relevant to their role.

ARTC and the Australasian Railway Association partnership

ARTC and the Australasian Railway Association are partnering to contribute to sustainable communities and thriving regions. This partnership has two key focus areas:

Boosting skills training into rail construction, operations and rail maintenance

Young people and interested community members will be supported into apprenticeships and traineeships and/or assisted to gain industry accreditation which could lead to employment on Inland Rail projects or operational rail.

Business participation and capability building

Small-to-medium enterprises in the regions along the alignment will receive expert advice on integrating into major project supply chains. They will also be provided with opportunities to build capability and supply chain readiness to meet the requirements of major projects.
