Inland Rail

Inland Rail is a once-in-a-generation project that will complete the backbone of Australia’s freight rail network. It will enhance supply chains by providing a transit time of 24 hours or less for freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane. Inland Rail will connect regional Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland to markets more efficiently, drive substantial cost savings for producers and consumers, and deliver significant economic benefits. Inland Rail is the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia and one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the world.

About the opportunity

As the First Nations Engagement Advisor you will support the implementation of a robust First Nations Participation Plan for the Inland Rail Program. This includes aiding in the delivery of the First Nations program, and project specific engagement plans. You will coordinate engagement efforts, and facilitating training, skills development, and procurement process to ensure the successful execution of the First Nations Participation Plan.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide coordination across Government agencies, service providers and industry stakeholders, to further the goal of achieving positive and lasting First Nations participation outcomes through proactive respectful engagement with Inland Rail’s First Nations Communities
  • Liaison with Aboriginal community stakeholders associated with the delivery and achievement of Inland Rail’s First Nation Participation objectives.
  • Assist in the preparation of a Program-wide and Project-specific First Nations engagement plans, integrated with broader Program and Project Engagement Plans, including regarding planned procurement processes and industry/employment events.
  • Assist in the preparation of communications materials (fact sheets, FAQs, media releases, good news stories) to support achievement and awareness of Inland Rail First Nations Participation objectives.
  • Enhancing respect and recognition for Inland Rail's Aboriginal cultures and communities.
  • You will provide support to the Social Performance team and the Inland Rail Skills Academy to identify and assist in the delivery of training/capacity building programs.
  • Interface with procurement and contractors regarding training and capacity development.

About You

You will need deep cultural knowledge of Indigenous traditions and histories. You will need to have empathy, be culturally sensitive, and active listening will play a part in establishing trusted relationships and fostering respect for First Nations perspectives.

To ensure success in this position, applicants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of Commonwealth and State programs, policies, legislation, regulation, and guidelines in relation to First Nations Participation.
  • Consultation and stakeholder management skills, including a demonstrated ability to liaise with and foster effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders such as First Nations stakeholders, while exercising sound judgement and appropriate discretion.
  • Experience in planning for and delivering First Nations participation outcomes on major Australian infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of First Nation communities of Inland Rail, including relevant representative and decision-making structures, and how these influence Inland Rail’s approach to designing and delivering engagement plans.
  • Facilitate and negotiation conflict cross-cultural issues.
    Personal organisation, written communication skills and project management skills with the ability to work independently, and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and proven ability to implement Workplace, Health, and Safety (WH&S) practices throughout all aspects of daily work activities.
  • Current driver’s licence and a willingness to travel.
