Local games made in the shade at Goondiwindi Rugby Union Football Club

Up to 200 of Goondiwindi Rugby Union Football Club’s loyal supporters will now be able to cheer on their local team in greater comfort thanks to a new shaded area funded in part by Inland Rail.

Club President Doug McDougall said it is great to give something back to the players and supporters who travel from around the region to compete for and support the club, as well as offer local businesses some work building the shade structure.

“Our football club has proudly represented the area for 56 years with players and supporters from Goondiwindi, Yelarbon, North Star, Tulloona, Croppa Creek and Boomi districts,” Mr McDougall said.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to compete last year due to our proximity to the NSW border and the restrictions that were in place.

“And because the bulk of our revenue is drawn from the canteen and sales on game days, our financial position was severely impacted in 2020,” he said.

This year, the club is back competing and better than ever.

“With the new shaded area, we’re able to offer a safer spectating environment for our supporters and increase attendance at games,” Mr McDougall continued.

“We’d like to thank the Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program for contributing to the construction of our shade structure.”

The Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program offers funding between $1000 and $4000 for individuals and organisations in regional areas along the route that contribute to local and regional prosperity, wellbeing, and sustainability.
