Melvyn Maylin, Project Director for Southern NSW projects

Tell us a bit about your professional background

I’m a professional engineer with extensive experience leading significant projects and driving change as a project director and executive manager over the past 20 years.

I’m also a civil structural engineer with specialist expertise in engineering design and project management related to the delivery of multidisciplinary linear infrastructure projects from inception to completion of construction. My transportation project experience includes road, rail, busway, and multi-modal projects.

I’ve built and managed teams of up to 400 staff in consultancy businesses that focussed on design and delivery of infrastructure projects. I’m also a Fellow of Engineers Australia and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

I’ve had the opportunity to work in New Zealand, UK, Hong Kong, and Canada, but I’ve been living in Sydney since 2006.

Why did you decide to join Inland Rail?

I believe my skills and experience will allow me to add value to the delivery of this major piece of infrastructure that will leave an enduring legacy for the benefit of Australians.

How is the project coming along?

All three southern NSW projects are currently in reference design, which is all about capturing important technical, environmental and social data and information which we need to seek project approvals from the state government.

We’ve made good progress in the last quarter across all three projects, particularly around getting greater clarity of construction works required, value engineering of design, and applications for regulatory approvals.

We are currently in the process of selecting a consultant service provider to complete pre-construction investigations on the Albury to Illabo and Stockinbingal to Parkes projects.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of working on these projects?

I am an engineer at heart, so I am thoroughly enjoying getting to grips with the technical requirements.

As a southern projects team, we’re really focused on achieving robust environmental outcomes and I’m proud we have a genuine desire to engage with community and other stakeholders. This is particularly rewarding.

What can the community expect to see in coming months?

In the next couple of months, the community may see some of our workers undertaking investigations along the alignment.

Our team will also be busy preparing project information and organising meetings with government representatives and agencies, landowners and the broader community to provide an update on our projects.

I can assure the community that during this challenging time, we are taking active steps to observe public health and safety guidelines because we’re committed to protecting the safety of our people and the communities in which we live and work.

The community’s involvement in the project is important to us. I encourage you to visit our website, keep an eye out in local papers and on social media or come and talk to our team to learn more about the southern NSW projects.

What do you like doing in your time off?

Socialising with friends and family over a beer or wine, taking my HSV GTS for a spin, and reading escapist fiction.
