Millmerran students try a trade
Twenty Millmerran students had the opportunity to try their hand at rail skills, electrical work and bricklaying at a skills development workshop held on 6 October 2021 at Millmerran State School.

The Try’a Trade day, hosted by Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), and supported by the Inland Rail Skills Academy, provided students with an insight into working in construction.
Inland Rail Surveying Project Manager, Mark Dade, who attended the workshop, said it was a great way to encourage young people into a career path in construction.
“Construction of the Border to Gowrie project, which is proposed to pass through the Millmerran area, is expected to start in 2023,” Mr Dade said.
“At the peak of construction there will be 950 jobs on the Border to Gowrie project alone – and there are four other projects to be delivered in Queensland.
“ARTC recognises that we need to work with communities and training organisations, like Construction Skills Queensland, to ensure there are enough skilled people to help us build and operate Inland Rail.”
Construction Skills Queensland Industry Development Manager, Brent Fewkes, said Try’a Trade is a CSQ initiative that gives students the opportunity to try a trade and possibly find one that could be right for them.
“Try’a Trade is all about giving it a go and taking the opportunity to try construction on for size,” Mr Fewkes said.
“With Inland Rail and a number of other big projects kicking off in the next few years, the construction industry is a great place to build a career.
“There are a number of pathways, and lots of learning opportunities, so a career in the construction industry is a great investment in your future.”
