Construction update December 2021

The last few months have been very busy with the upgrade of track between Bellata and South Moree. On Sunday 31 October 2021, our contractor Trans4m Rail successfully handed back 29km of upgraded track to ARTC as part of the Inland Rail Narrabri to North Star Phase 1 project.

Despite record rainfall, a mouse plague, COVID lockdowns and travel restrictions throughout construction, the first grain train was loaded up on Monday 1 November 2021, right on time for another busy harvest for NSW farmers.

The project team clocked up more than 660,500 hours in reaching this major construction milestone which involved:

  • Laying 48,012 new concrete sleepers
  • Upgrading 28.807 km of track
  • Demolishing and reconstructing Gurley Bridge
  • Installing 1,118 concrete culvert units
  • Upgrading eight level crossings
  • Excavating more than 141,600m3 of dirt; and
  • Installing more than 56,500m3 of bottom and top ballast.

Minor activities such as landscaping and fencing will continue in this area as part of the transition to operations.

Construction between North Camurra and North Star is now well underway with all old rail and sleepers now removed. The team is progressing with earthworks, installing level crossings, and constructing new bridges at Gil Gil Creek, Croppa Creek and Yallaroi Creek.
