New tennis court nets a hit with locals

It’s game, set and match for the Wirrinya Progress & Sports Association following the delivery of new tennis nets for its 100-year-old courts.

Gemma Lee, Secretary of the Wirrinya Progress & Sports Association said receiving the Inland Rail donation was vital for sustaining a positive community spirit.

“Coronavirus on the back of a pretty horrible drought has not been good for our community,” Mrs Lee said “We haven’t been able to come together as a community socially, and you really need something to lift your spirits,” Mrs Lee said.

Wirrinya Progress & Sports Association recently recommenced Friday tennis lessons. The three half-hour sessions for young players begin at 4.30pm. It is usually followed by a traditional weekly barbecue before the adults take to the court.

“Having somewhere to go is so important for our community and giving our courts a boost with new nets is great,” Mrs Lee said.

The next round of applications for the Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations program close on 31 October 2020. Visit for more information.
