Proposed bridge designs impress Glenrowan locals

More than 40 locals had a first interactive look at the new bridge proposed to replace Glenrowan’s existing Beaconsfield Parade bridge at an information session on 11 May.

Around 40 people attended the session to see proposed bridge designs for Glenrowan's Beaconsfield Parade.

Those who attended were largely pleased to see the proposed open span bridge design, which respects the historic town’s existing heritage sites including Ann Jones Inn and the Station Master’s House.

Inland Rail Stakeholder Engagement Lead, Angeline Daniels said the interactive session was an opportunity for interested community members to view 3D representations of the proposed bridge and ask questions of the project team.

“People were interested in the 3D model visualisations, which showed how the proposed bridge design would provide safe and modern access through Glenrowan, while respecting and protecting the much-loved heritage sites surrounding the area,” Angeline said.

“We had our experienced project manager and engineer Christian Rogers available to provide deeper insight on some technical questions about the proposed bridge design, and our environment and planning advisor Fatemeh Rashidifar explained the specifics of the Planning Scheme Amendment process. .

“The open-span bridge design example showed how this type of bridge could really open up the area’s public amenity, enhancing access not only for vehicles but pedestrians and cyclists as well.

“We noted a range of great ideas contributing to the beautification of the area, which is great to hear and will be factored into considerations for further urban and detailed design work.

“There were also some valid concerns raised about surrounding access and we will continue working with the community, Rural City of Wangaratta Council and other key stakeholders to find solutions,” Angeline said.

Importantly, the community still has plenty of opportunities to incorporate feedback into design considerations as we complete the project’s reference design in Victoria and move into the detailed design phase of the project.

The design examples form part of the Tottenham to Albury project’s heritage permit application for the Glenrowan Heritage Precinct, which encompasses the Beaconsfield Parade bridge site. Heritage Victoria will be seeking community feedback on our application in the coming weeks, and we’ll share more details soon.
