STEM on Track builds budding engineers

In June, students across north west NSW were invited to attend the Science and Engineering Challenge, hosted by the University of Newcastle at Narrabri’s Crossing Theatre.

The partnership between Inland Rail Skills Academy and the University of Newcastle will bring the interactive program to more than 7,500 students over four events across regional and rural New South Wales.

Over three days, primary and high school students who had ventured from as far as Coonamble, Coonabarabran and Bingara, put their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) to the test, in a series of fun and educational workshops sponsored by our Inland Rail Skills Academy.

Students experimented, iterated and invented solutions to STEM challenges including building earthquake-proof towers, designing their own Morse code, and developing catapults made from paddle pop sticks, tape and rubber bands.

Highlights of the three-day event included a bridge building challenge where the model bridges were tested in front of all students and judged by members of the Inland Rail team, as well as a competition between high school students and engineers from the Inland Rail and Trans4m Rail team to build and test their own mini-bridge.
