What is a turnout? … X marks the spot!

A turnout is a track configuration that enables trains to move from one track to another, such as at crossing loops. The trains ‘turn out’ from one rail line to another. Our contractor, Trans4m Rail will install 25 turnouts across 10 different locations for the Narrabri to North Star Phase 1 project.

A rail turnout near Moree

Work has commenced on the Coolleearllee turnout – located between Wongabindie Road and Calimpa Lane – which will lead onto a new crossing loop for freight trains using the line.

Of the 25 turnouts being installed by Trans4m Rail, 10 will be the first-of-a-kind design built in Australia and will be around 83 metres long once constructed.
