Kagaru to Acacia Ridge to Bromelton

This 49km section of track needs to be modified to provide sufficient height and width to support the safe running of double-stacked freight trains along the interstate route. The route follows the existing interstate track south from Kagaru to Bromelton and north to Brisbane’s major intermodal terminal at Acacia Ridge.

Calvert to Kagaru

This 53km section includes building a new dual gauge track. The Calvert to Kagaru section follows the protected Southern Freight Rail Corridor (SFRC) which links the West Moreton line near Calvert to the interstate rail line near Kagaru, north of Beaudesert.

Helidon to Calvert

This 47km stretch of Inland Rail involves the construction of a new dual gauge rail line connecting Helidon (east of Toowoomba) with Calvert (west of Ipswich). This section uses the existing rail corridor and the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ Gowrie to Grandchester protected rail corridor, with possible refinements being considered within a defined study area.

Gowrie to Helidon

The 28km Gowrie to Helidon section of Inland Rail includes constructing a new track through the Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley region in Queensland and building a vast freight tunnel. This section uses both the existing rail corridor at Gowrie and the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ Gowrie to Grandchester 2003 protected corridor.

This section includes building 145km of new dual gauge track and upgrading 71km of track from the NSW/Queensland border, near Yelarbon, to Gowrie Junction, north west of Toowoomba

North Star to NSW/Qld Border

The project includes upgrading 25km of non-operational rail line and 14km of new track across the Macintyre River, allowing for future connections to Goondiwindi and the broader region. It follows the old track towards Boggabilla and then crosses the river along the border before joining the existing rail line in Queensland.

Narrabri to North Star

This section will upgrade 186km of existing rail corridor and construct 2.3km of new track near Camurra. Travelling north, the track begins in Narrabri, passing through Edgeroi, Bellata, Gurley, Moree, Camurra, Crooble, Milguy, Croppa Creek and on to North Star.

The 306km preferred route between Narromine and Narrabri is via Burroway, Curban, Mt Tenandra and Baradine. This is Inland Rail’s longest section of new track.

The Parkes to Narromine section was commissioned in late September 2020 and is now operational. The project involved upgrading 98.4km of existing rail track between Parkes and Narromine and construction of 5.3km of new rail track near Parkes, known as the North West Connection.

This section will upgrade 170km of existing rail track between the towns of Stockinbingal and Parkes. This track passes through the communities of Milvale, Bribbaree, Quandialla, Caragabal and Forbes.

This section will upgrade 185km of existing rail track from the Victoria-NSW border to Illabo in regional New South Wales. This track passes through the towns of Albury, Culcairn , Henty, Yerong Creek, The Rock, Uranquinty, Wagga Wagga and Junee.

Tottenham to Albury

This section will upgrade 305km of existing rail corridor between the Victoria-NSW border at Albury-Wodonga and Melbourne. Travelling south, the project will follow the existing rail corridor running close to the Hume Highway from the Murray River at Wodonga to the outskirts of Melbourne. It then shares the Regional Victorian rail corridor (V/Line) from Seymour to Beveridge.
