Funding helps make Scouts camp more accessible

Broadford Scouts were able to get away from it all at a two-day camp which was hugely popular thanks to an Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations grant.

Bella, 6, Jasleen, 7, Erik, 6, and Joey, 6, were among the 60 members of Broadford Scouts who enjoyed a weekend Scout Camp getaway made more accessible through an Inland Rail Community Sponsorships and Donations grant.

Broadford Scouts enjoyed a weekend at Rowallan Scout Camp and made the most of their first getaway since the COVID crisis took hold.

Thanks to funding from Inland Rail’s Community Sponsorships and Donations scheme, the cost of the camp was kept low enough to enable as many Scouts to attend as possible.

More than 60 children from 40 families and carers enjoyed a weekend in the great outdoors.

Broadford Scouts secretary Tanya Maiwald said the group had been made aware that financial issues could have limited the number of Scouts attending.

“We knew some families had approached the Leader talking about lost jobs, lost shifts, lost income – a lot of people in Broadford have been affected by COVID and everything being closed down,” she said.

“The grant meant they only needed to provide $20 for extra food and the kids could go to camp.

“Almost all the children from our group took up this opportunity.”

Ms Maiwald said the group relished an opportunity to get away from it all for a couple of days, enjoying trekking with compasses, archery and rope courses.
