Surveying our Aboriginal cultural heritage

Inland Rail works closely with local experts to protect and preserve Aboriginal Cultural Heritage along the alignment. In late October, archaeologists and local Aboriginal representatives conducted cultural heritage surveys in the Phase 2 area.

Kerrie Saunders is a great local ambassador for her community.

As part of our commitment to achieve excellence in Aboriginal cultural heritage in NSW, we are conducting cultural heritage surveys during the EIS investigation phase of the project.

This work addresses obligations mandated by the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 (NSW), which covers aboriginal cultural heritage in NSW.

One expert helping us complete this work is Kerrie Saunders.

Kerrie is a local indigenous ambassador and Landcare member, who has participated in Phase 1 and Phase 2 cultural heritage surveys for Narrabri to North Star. In addition to working with us, Kerrie runs a Facebook page called Yinarr-Ma, which showcases a range of local bush tucker.

Cultural heritage survey teams are comprised of local Aboriginal experts and ambassadors like Kerrie, archaeologists, Aboriginal party representatives and Inland Rail representatives.

The survey teams investigate a variety of locations on multiple occasions, to understand the environment in order to manage and preserve cultural heritage in the area.

We are working with Aboriginal parties to engage appropriate technical advisors, where required or requested. This may include archaeologists, anthropologists, historians or environmental specialists skilled in identifying, managing and preserving Aboriginal cultural heritage.
